The performance of Flash Glucose Monitoring

APT-logo

In the recent journal paper «Differences Between Flash Glucose Monitoring and Fingerprick measurements» by Odd Martin Staal and colleagues in Artificial Pancreas Trondheim, the performance of a commercially available glucose monitoring device, Freestyle Libre, is analyzed and compared to fingerprick capillary blood measurements. It is found that while the Freestyle Libre has a good overall accuracy for the majority of patients, there are individual differences between the sensors, most notably individual bias and lag effects, that makes the precision less impressive for some of the patients. This between-sensor variability is important for users to know about, and could also be useful input to the manufacturer of the Freestyle Libre with regards to improving the factory calibration or designing a voluntary calibration as seen in conventional Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM) systems.
